Podi Chutney

"Podi Chutney"
Podi Chutney is a spicy powder chutney served as a side dish along with idli, vada, dosa. Its a very spicy powder chutney made with roasted lentil and chillies .Also known as gun powder, it is usually mixed with gingelly oil (Sesame oil). However I love having it with olive oil.
I had this for the first time at a South Indian food joint in Mumbai... Since then had been using the store brought MTR chutney powder until I got this recipe from a friend. Its a very simple recipe and tastes almost like the store brought while the only difference is in the colour.

Urad Dal - 1/2 cup
Chana dal - 1/4 th cup
Sesame seed - 1/2 teaspoon
Dry red chillies - 10
Curry Leaves - 10 - 12
Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
Hing  (asafoetida) - 1 teaspoon
Salt - 1 teaspoon
Oil - 1 teaspoon

Heat oil in a kadhai and add the mustard seeds once they start popping turn off the heat and transfer in to a dry plate.

In the same kadhai dry roast the chana dal until it starts releasing its nutty aroma, transfer into a clean dry plate. Dry roast the Urad dal along with sesame seeds and transfer into plate. Followed by Dry roasting theged chillies and curry leaves.

All all ingredients (other than the mustard seeds) to cool then transfer into a grinder and make a coarse powder.

Add salt, hing and mustard seeds grind again for a minute or so.

Transfer into a clean airtight jar.  Serve along with Idli, dosa, vada etc.
